I have heard that Chinese kingdoms from the middle ages employed the repeating Cross-bow. I first heard of them when I played Age of Empires II. They call them Cho-Ku-Nu.
The advantage was obvious of course, repeating fire! Very appealing at the time. Unfortunately it had a lower effective range that was lower than your typical cross bow. So pretty much you are staring at the whites of the eyes of your enemies when firing this amazing weapon.
Nonetheless, it is an amazing weapon, quite brilliant if you ask me. Dont know about it's effectiveness in battle, but I am sure it must have been.

yah, must have been neat. article stated that it needed to be poisoned because of the low draw weight and accuracy (hip fired)
